Hi all, it's always great reading blogs about SEO as i find it very interesting as i am a web designer. I have noticed that all the sites that i build are getting emails all the time where there are loads of companies offering their services saying that they can help their website get to the top and they say they can get loads of potential customers to their site.Question 1 is how much should a small company pay per month to improve the sites popularity? Question 2 is should this be done through growing the amount of backlinks through blogs etc or ppc campaigns?. Thankyou Paul....

Hi Mark, thanks for your comments. I do hold back quite a lot these days believe it or not or my blog would just be one big rant (or I wouldn't have time to do anything else) :) But when my clients and other small business local to me are getting contacted by money grabbing charlatans I can't help myself.

I think you are local to me, we should catch up sometime.

Hi Kay,

I must say I like your approach, you don't hold back when it comes to telling us all how it is. I am a firm believer that businesses should embrace the Internet and find out as much as they can about things like PPC and SEO, it's the only way we will prevent these so called charlatans from taking advantage of businesses who are none the wiser.

Keep up the good work.
Kindest Regards
Mark Mooney

Hi Mike

a little harsh - we have a very good reputation withion the SEO industry.

Granted the DMOZ was a little naughty! But many people are fed up of waiting years to be accepted - Grease a palm and in you go - We are still following the DMOZ guidelines for site acceptance though - we do not let anybody in - the site must be up to standard

Anyway, my advice - Swerve Lavora as wide as possible. They are dragging our industry down and for this reason I would love to see us regulated

Seems we kicked a few wasps nests with our DMOZ listings!!

@Mike - thanks for your comments. I linked to Gareth Hoyles post because it refers to the same topic of my post. I'm unaware of the tweeting you mentioned though, perhaps you could offer a link to the particular tweet you are referring to so it can be reviewed. I prefer to judge from experience and facts rather than heresay :)

Nice piece - not sure I would hold Gareth Hoyle in such high regard though. Isn't he the bloke that's tweeting and offer guaranteeing DMoz listings within 24 hours on payment of a £100 fee?

This one has been brewing a week or so, I've actually calmed down now otherwise I would have named names like Gareth Hoyle did on his blog: <broken link removed 22/09/11>

You're annoyed at the moment aren't you ;)

Loved this post. I touched on this @ SEO Bullshit and tbh, it still has not gone away!

Massive bugbear of our sales team who get lumped into the same category of crappers :(
