Flattery gets you nowhere

comment-spamI’ve said before that I get very excited when someone comments and eagerly click the admin panel to see what they said.

Imagine how bloody annoying it is to see nothing but spam.

I’m not alien to comment spam having maintained a number of blogs for a while but you take a different kind of notice of it when it’s your own blog.

I have to say the comments are getting more imaginative. These spammers are really developing the way they try to interact with you from commenting on the content of the actual post to stroking your ego.

Sometimes I’m tempted to remove the website address and approve them anyway. Not really.

We have those that want to be helpful in pointing out that something needs fixing:

Great site, exactly what I was looking for, I can’t get your RSS feed to work right in google chrome though, is it on my end? Thanks.

We still have the commenters who can’t even be bothered to say much at all:

Hello,
Come On
Thanks

My favourites are the ones that use flattery:

This is a great site, I love the theme you are using. I Stumbled it for you and bookmarked it on Digg.

Hi, I found your blog on msn. I’m pretty happyto have found your blogbecause I think it is interesting! I hope you don’t mind I retweeted this interesting post?

Hi that is a genuinely interesting view, It does give one food for thought, I am very delighted I stumbled on your blog, i was using Stumbleupon at the time, in any case i don

Very good blog post I like your site carry on the good posts

It’s really not hard to identify spam. The website address they add is usually the first sign. There is the poor grammar and nonsensical wittering. The use of anchor text within the comment. Then there is the 100′s of exact same comments made on blogs everywhere, which really is shameful of blog owners. Have you people never heard of comment moderation or perhaps akismet?

But keep the flattery coming spammers. It makes me smile but it won’t get you anywhere

heehee… fun stuff Kay… oh did I mention, “I really love this blog. SEO is important in modren intrenet markets”

Funny thing, I was going to write Matt and ask to be put back to a PR3 because no sooner had the Trail got a PR5 in the last update and the spam went through the roof. One thing I have found though is turning off the auto-publishing of comments helped take it from 200 spam comments/day down to about 20…

Fun rant dear… look forward to having ye on the new blog… shoulda named it ‘Rants R Us’ hehe….

Thanks for your kind words Dave :)

I can’t get over how many people are devalueing their own blogs by not pre-approving comments. Clearly they think those comments regardless of what they are add some kind of value to their post. Ahem, NOT when they are duplicated with 100′s of other blog comments they aren’t! Geeeez!

I have a few rants stewing and will put something together for SEOBullsh*t soon. Do I email the content to you?
