I am an SEO

i-am-an-seoI’ve noticed when people write about SEO (an abbreviation of Search Engine Optimisation) some use “a SEO” and some use “an SEO”.

I wanted to know which was correct so I looked it up.

If SEO were an acronym then you would always use “a SEO” because we would be reading the abbreviation out as if it were a word. Examples of abbreviations that are acronyms are NATO and NASA.

But we don’t read SEO out as if it were a word (“See-oh”); we read out the letters (“Ess-eeh-oh”).

There are two rules when using an abbreviation:

  1. Vocalisation of the the first letter
  2. Vocalisation of the first word

Both uses are correct but there should be consistency.

So it’s fine to say “We provide an SEO service” and it’s equally fine to say “We provide a SEO service”. As long as you don’t keep switching between the two.

So now you know :)

I definately definatly definitely prefer “an SEO”. Which are you?

I always say ‘Find an SEO Company’ never ‘Find a SEO Company’. Its these bloody Yanks ruining our grammar again!

haha more a case of ‘scraping the barrel for something to write about’. I figured the more I blog the better I will get at it and of course it’s all about content, right? I just need to address the balance between tosh and interesting reading. Thanks for your support as always! :)
